Who is your local hero?

People are being asked to nominate their neighbourhood superstars in the search for community champions from Blaby district.

The Council’s ninth annual Outstanding Achievement Awards are fast approaching and friends, families, and workmates are being asked to put forward individuals or groups who they think deserve recognition for making a difference in their community.

Nominations are now being accepted for the following categories:

  • Outstanding achievement by a young person
  • Selfless services to a voluntary body or the community which is of a social or environmental nature
  • Sporting achievement
  • Community or voluntary group that improves the quality of life for residents in the district
  • Individual or group that makes the district a safer place to live

Council leader Ernie White said:

“There are so many people doing wonderful things across Blaby district and it’s important we recognise their achievements.

“Over the years we have paid tribute to many young and old people who have gone the extra mile to serve their community or achieve great things on a personal level and I’m looking forward to seeing which local heroes we can uncover this time round.”

Previous winners include Cosby cyclist Lucy Garner, who was crowned junior world road race champion in September 2011 and 89-year-old Donald Wills, who had volunteered as a neighbourhood watch co-ordinator in Braunstone Town for 13 years.

Last year Ashley Vineham won the award for sporting achievement after volunteering at Stoney Stanton football club for more than 20 years while the group award went to A Place to Grow, the community garden in Enderby.

The 2012 awards have received generous sponsorship from Grove Park Commercial Centre, Fosse Shopping Park, Ford & Slater, Leicester Marriott, Bardon Aggregates, Leicester Chamber of Commerce and Westleigh Developments ltd.

Finalists will be invited to a presentation dinner on 4th October 2012 where cash prizes and awards will be presented to the winners and runners up.

Since 2004 more than 50 individuals and groups from across Blaby have been recognised for making a difference in their communities.
