At a children’s disco held on Saturday 19th May, the ‘Your Thorpe Astley’ team were delighted to present a £200 cheque to Mayor of Braunstone Town, Gary Sanders.
The money was in aid of LAMP, Gary’s chosen charity during his term as the Mayor. The funds were raised during YTA’s programme of events during the past year. LAMP is an independent voluntary organisation working to promote good mental health for everyone living in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
Saturday’s disco event was held in the Thorpe Astley Community Centre on Lakin Drive, Thorpe Astley.
Your Thorpe Astley is a voluntary community group dedicated to furthering the interests of all Thorpe Astley residents, and ensuring that the Community Centre facility meets the needs of everyone in the community.
They were formed in 2010 around the time of the opening of the new Community Centre in Thorpe Astley. Your Thorpe Astley took up the mantle of the former Thorpe Astley Community Association that had worked for nearly 10 years to ensure that Thorpe Astley received the community facility that it deserved, and finally got in October 2010.
They meet on a monthly basis at the Centre and hold numerous events throughout the year.
Although they are not part of Braunstone Town Council (who manage the Centre and the open spaces around Thorpe Astley), the team work closely with the council to represent local residents’ views and campaign on their behalf where they can.
