This week Blaby District Council started work at Huncote Leisure Centre to install landfill gas mitigation. Once completed the gas mitigation will help control the levels of landfill gas on the site.
During this work Council contractors have measured unusually elevated levels of landfill gas on the site. As a result of these measurements a decision has been taken to close Huncote Leisure Centre as a precautionary measure.
The District Council want to reassure residents that wthey are continually monitoring and measuring the levels of gas and that no additional gas has been released because of these works, and residential properties are not affected. This closure will be in place whilst a full investigation is made by Council contractors, and until the mitigation works at the Leisure Centre are complete.
Cllr Terry Richardson, Leader of the Council, said: “The safety of our residents and leisure centre users is paramount to us, that is why we have decided to close the centre based on the advice of the contractors carrying out this work
“We will work closely with our contractors to reduce the landfill gas levels and ensure that, once the mitigation works are complete, and the area is completely safe, the leisure centre will once again open for the public to enjoy.”
Residents who live nearby are asked to please keep doors and windows closed and avoid visiting the Leisure Centre and the land in that area.
Huncote Leisure Centre is expected to be closed until Friday 12 November, users of the Fitness Centre will be able to use Enderby Leisure Centre at no extra cost.
An update will be available on the District Council’s website in the coming days.
