Don’t lose your right to vote

vote boxHouseholds in the District of Blaby are being asked to check that the electoral forms, to be delivered from Monday 3 August 2015, are correct.

Every home in Enderby and elsewhere in Blaby District will soon be receiving a form asking residents to check whether the information that appears on the electoral register for those living at their address is correct as part of the Council’s annual voter registration canvass.

The aim of the form is to ensure that the electoral register is up to date and to identify any residents who are not registered so that they can be encouraged to do so.

Being on the electoral register is important not just for voting, but may also affect a person’s ability to access credit facilities.

Residents can complete the form and send it back to the council for free. The form can alternatively be completed online at www.registerbyinternet.com/blaby. If all details are correct residents can call 0800 197 9871 or text 80212 to confirm.

With the Police and Crime Commissioner elections taking place across Leicestershire in May 2016, this is an opportunity for residents to make sure that when the elections take place they will easily be able to take part.

To be eligible to register to vote in England a person must be:

  • Aged 16 or over (a person may register to vote at 16, but may not vote until they are 18)
  • A British or qualifying Commonwealth citizen who has leave to enter and remain in the UK
or does not require such leave.
  • A citizen of the Republic of Ireland or other European Union (EU) member state.

British citizens, Irish citizens and qualifying citizens of Commonwealth countries (including Cyprus and Malta), as well as citizens of other EU member states can vote in local government elections and Police and Crime Commissioner elections in England and Wales.

It is particularly important that anyone who has moved address recently looks out for the form to check whether they are registered.

Any residents who have any questions can contact the Electoral Services Team by e-mailing electoral@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 272 7560 during office hours. Further information is available at www.blaby.gov.uk.

Register to vote today….. do it online

There are fewer than 100 days until voters go to the polls to elect a Member of Parliament for the South Leicestershire constituency. Local elections are also taking place on the same day.

Anyone not registered can do so at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Sandra Whiles, Electoral Registration Officer for Blaby District Council, said:

“Anyone not yet registered to vote should do so as soon as possible in order for them to be able to have their say on issues that affect their lives.

“I would urge Blaby District Council residents to use National Voter Registration Day to spread the message amongst family and friends who may not have registered yet that it only takes a few minutes to complete the form online.”

Kay Jenkins, Head of English regions at the Electoral Commission, said:

“National Voter Registration Day exists because it’s important that anyone who’s eligible to be on the register, but has not yet registered, does so.

“Young people, students and people who move frequently are much less likely to be registered to vote. We’re urging them to use the day as an opportunity to get onto the electoral register.”

In the next few days all Blaby District Council properties will also receive a letter with details of who is currently on the electoral register for that property.

Anyone living at the property, but whose name is not on the letter, should register to vote at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

Local residents can obtain a paper copy of the registration form by visiting www.gov.uk/register-to-vote or by requesting a form by email at electoral.services@blaby.gov.uk or calling 0116 272 7560.
