Dodgeball: Ligresses win their first national title

Leicester City Ligresses won their first women’s national title in their second year of existence.

Contributor Simon Moody, Head Coach of Enderby Dodgeball Club, tells us about the club’s success in the National Dodgeball Championships held on 24th June 2012 at Cranfield University. They defeated the 2010 champions, Southampton Dodgettes, in a Final which went all the way to the seventh game. Ligresses were never behind in the Final.

The Ligresses consist of Captain Billie Wright, Megan Rose, Clarissa Rigby, Kat Hurren, Ting Hin Tang, Katie Suffolk and Yasmin Hughes

They went into a two game lead with narrow one player wins (4-3 & 3-2), catches from Megan Rose and Yasmin Hughes helping to get the lead, but Southampton fired back to level the match with convincing 5-2 and 6-0 victories, thanks to great attacking play from captain Steph Chatfield, supported by Liz Hayhew and Nicole Roberts.

Game 5 finished up a 4-4 draw but Leicester retook the lead in Game 6 (5-2) and completed the victory in the seventh game with a 5-3 win; captain Billie Wright, Ting Hin-Tang, Clarissa Rigby and Katie Suffolk all contributing some big hits to secure Ligresses victory.

The two finalists had also met in Group A in Round One. On that occasion the Dodgettes had dominated the match winning six of the seven games. They secured a Semi-final place with a win over Bedford Bulls Women II, by the same score as their match with Ligresses. This left Leicester and Bedford II to fight it out for second place in the group and it was Ligresses who came out on top by five games to one. Unfortunately for the eventual champions, one of their most experienced players, Kat Hurren, severely twisted her ankle in their match with Bedford and she was unable to play in the knock out stages.

LC Ligresses faced Warwick Warriors Women (3rd in Group B) in their first KO match. The first game finished with five players each and then teams each won a game to keep the score level at 1-1. Ligresses then went all out and blasted out Warwick in the next three (5-0, 5-0 and 6-0) to win a Semi-final encounter with the 2011 champions Bedford Bulls Women I.

Bedford I had topped Group B with two 5-1 victories over Balls of Steel Ladies (Nottingham Uni) and Warwick, to put them straight through to the last four.

Bedford and Leicester fought out an incredibly close semi-final, none of the seven games scored more than two players apart, as both teams counter-attacked and made catches to keep the games in the balance.

The teams each won one of the first two, drew the 3rd and then Ligresses went 3-1 ahead with two wins both scored 4-3. Bedford I closed the deficit with a 4-2 win but Leicester did enough to make it to the Final by halting Bedford’s recovery; Game 7 ending as a draw.

Southampton Dodgettes faced Balls of Steel Ladies in their penultimate match. BoS finished 2nd in Group B thanks to a 5-1 win over Warwick. The Nottingham students had too much experience for Bedford II in the KO rounds, producing the only women’s match in which the winner conceded no games, winning the first four in the best-of-seven tie. However, they could not repeat this against the Dodgettes. Southampton went two games up, the third was drawn and then Balls of Steel fired back to square up the match at two games each. Southampton answered the revival with two convincing games, 4-1 and 6-0, to win through to the Final by four games to two.

The 3rd Place Match between Balls of Steel ladies and Bedford Bulls Women I went all the way to Game 7, same as all matches in the last four. After Bedford moved 2 games ahead, BoS won the next three to move into a 3-2 lead. Bedford won the sixth to get the score back to three games each.

The deciding seventh game was decided by a single player, 4 to 3, in favour of Balls of Steel Ladies, who duplicated their third place of 2010.
