Blaby District nationally popular for first time buyers

Photo: HousesFirst time buyers are making the District of Blaby their preferred choice to set up home, as research indicates the area is in the top five nationally for those purchasing their first property.

A study by Experian has shown that Blaby District is in the top five for ‘Aspiring Homemakers’ which is defined as “young families on the first rung of the property ladder, aged 26-35.” Other towns in the country in the top five include Milton Keynes and Bracknell Forest in Berkshire.

Blaby District has many large businesses which offer excellent employment prospects within the district, as well being within commutable distances to Leicester and Junction 21 of the M1, the gateway to the north, south and Birmingham.

Along with the business and transport links, the council ensures that 25% of all new homes built are ‘affordable houses’ and have supported the building of five Rural Exception Sites in the district, which has delivered affordable housing to enable local people to stay within their local community.

Councillor Terry Richardson, Leader of the Council, said:

“This is fantastic news and further emphasises the advantages we have of our location within the County.

“Blaby District really is one of the jewels in Leicestershire. We have great transport links, prosperous businesses with superb employment opportunities and one of the most popular retail parks in the country in Fosse Park.

“We have new housing and employment developments on the horizon, such as Lubbesthorpe on the horizon I hope that we can continue to build thriving long-term communities.”

Sandra Whiles, Chief Executive of Blaby District Council, said:

“I’m delighted to hear that we’re such a popular place for first time buyers. Our hard work in supporting people onto the housing ladder through the Local Authority Mortgage Scheme, promoting the Help to Buy scheme and Rural Exception Sites is really paying off.

“We’re determined to make sure the district will remain a great ideal location to live, work and play in for many years to come.”

Help at hand for first time buyers

Help to Buy graphicResidents in Blaby District looking for advice on how best to step onto the property ladder can attend a drop-in event at the Council’s offices in Narborough.

Taking place on Wednesday 26 November, 10am – 3pm, residents can find out what options are available to them and receive impartial advice from an independent financial advisor.

Councillor Maggie Wright, portfolio holder for Community Services, at Blaby District Council, said:

“It is getting increasingly more difficult for first time buyers to make that first step onto the housing ladder. This drop-in event is a great chance for residents to ask questions, and ultimately find out how to make getting their dream home a reality.”

The event is being organised by Orbit, the government’s Help to Buy agents in Leicestershire.
