Rise and shine with the dawn chorus walk

fosse meadows2Early risers can make the most of their Saturday morning by getting to know the many birds of Fosse Meadows and their songs during a dawn chorus walk.

Meeting at 4.45am one of the park’s long standing volunteer rangers David Mitchell will guide people on a two hour leisurely walk around the nature reserve.

Mr. Mitchell said:

“This is a great chance to get to know the many birds and their songs at this magical hour and at this special time of year.”

The Fosse Meadows site, near Sharnford, has extensive paths through flower meadows and woodlands.

It is a good area for bird spotting, with a wildlife lake and bird hide.

The walk is open to anyone who is reasonably mobile, booking is not necessary and it is free of charge.

Simply meet at Fosse Meadows car park at 4.45am on Saturday May 11.

Get involved with your local green space

A local group that works hard to look after one of Blaby district’s major green spaces is looking to recruit more helpers.

The Friends of Fosse Meadows works alongside Blaby District Council to preserve and maintain the unique environment of FosseMeadowsNaturePark, near Sharnford.

Volunteers will get to be part of a team of dedicated workers with local interests at heart, take an active role in developmental work with the Meadows and help to fundraise.

Councillor David Clements, Corporate Services, Performance and Leisure portfolio holder at Blaby District Council, said:

“The Friends of Fosse Meadows group help us to maintain and improve Fosse Meadows, which is one of the Council’s strategic green spaces.

“We support the volunteers by helping them to plan work, provide them with equipment and give them advice. It’s great to see people giving up their spare time to help out and I hope to see many more get involved.”

Hair-raising Halloween event at Fosse Meadows

An evening of family fun has been planned at Fosse Meadows nature area in Sharnford to celebrate Halloween on Friday October 28.

Spooky story walks, a monster hunt, face painting and a fancy dress competition are all sure to create a spine chilling autumn atmosphere in the park.

People brave enough to attend the free event can also learn Michael Jackson’s ghoulish Thriller dance in the moonlight of the meadows.

All the usual delicious Halloween treats will be available on the night with activities taking place from 4pm – 7pm.

Circus skills fun day at Fosse Meadows

Families can learn circus skills at a free fun day at Fosse Meadows nature area in Sharnford on Sunday September 18.

The park will play host to Cirque du Fosse with juggling, face painting, story telling, balloon modelling, toddler’s games and arts and crafts.

Activities will take place from 1pm – 3pm.

The event will be followed by a performance from Fred’s Flying Circus at 3.30pm. Entrance to the show is £5 per person for adults and children.
