District sporting heroes honoured

PhotoVolunteers, clubs and sporting stars attended an evening to remember at the eighth Blaby District Local Sports Alliance (LSA) Awards.

The evening, sponsored by Cherry Lane Garden Centre, took place on Thursday 16 November at Countesthorpe Community College.

Hosted by BBC Radio Leicester’s Ian Stringer, nine winners were honoured and presented with trophies before an audience of category finalists, sponsors, family and friends and specially invited guests.

Winners included Sports Person of the Year Lizzie Warner, the Archery sensation who is the reigning UK Junior and UK Senior National Indoor Champion. For the last five years Lizzie has won an age group national title.

John Dalton of Kirby Muxloe was given the Special Recognition Award for 26 years as treasurer and Club Secretary of Kirby Muxloe 88 Junior Football Club. His work helped the club grow from four teams to 22 sides and Charter Standard Status with The FA.

Volunteer of the Year Was awarded to Alan Downes, who has seen Huncote Squash Club’s popularity soar since taking over the running of the club.

Multi-talented Hope Perrett won Young Sports Person of the Year as an exceptional footballer, athlete and Judo player, winning prestigious honours in all three sports.

Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Health Improvement, Leisure & Regulatory Services, said:

“Once again these awards highlight the incredible talent and hardworking volunteers we have in Blaby District. I am so proud of all the finalists, and extremely proud that we get to honour them at such a great event.

“I want to thank all of our sponsors, including our main sponsor Cherry Lane Garden Centre, for helping us to make this night possible.”

Over 50 athletes, volunteers and groups were nominated, with all winners being put forward for the next Leicester Mercury Sports Awards.
