Braunstone Civic Centre hosted the ‘Opportunities 4 Jobs’ event

Dozens of people attended a free event that offered help and advice for those facing redundancy or looking for a job.

The Opportunities 4 Jobs event, at Braunstone Civic Centre, played host to a range of organisations offering support, training, skills and job vacancies.

Residents were able to find out about training and adult education courses, starting a new business venture, benefit allowance, interview and job application skills as well as volunteering options.

Sisters Kate and Denise Baker, from BraunstoneTown and LeicesterCity, heard about the event on Facebook.

Kate is currently working, but facing potential redundancy. She said:

“I’ve been doing the same type of work for the last ten years, so wanted to find out what other options I have. I brought my CV with me and have had some advice on it plus I’ve been looking into further education courses.”

Denise is a single parent and has not worked for the last ten years. She said:

“It’s been a while since I last had a job so I’ve been looking at going back to college. This kind of event makes it a lot easier to talk to organisations you wouldn’t normally get a chance to and definitely think there should be more days like this.”

Matt Wilkinson, 18, from BraunstoneTown, has a job but came along to find out about other job opportunities and further education possibilities…..

“After doing my A-levels, I started working, but now I’m thinking about doing an apprenticeship or getting another qualification.

Matt continued…

I’ve been having a chat with the people on the Leicestershire County Council stand and looking into an IT course.”

Over twenty organisations were involved and included Blaby District Council’s Benefits & Resident Support teams, Community Action Partnership, Leicestershire County Council Adult Learning Service and Apprenticeships, Acorn training, Mace, Mark Group, Avon, Westminster Healthcare, Prospects, South Leics College, Job Centre Plus and Voluntary Action Leicestershire.
