Should Thorpe Astley have its own parish council?

Posted on October 5, 2011November 27, 2011 by staff

People are being reminded to have their say on a proposal to split BraunstoneTown and Thorpe Astley into separate council areas.

Councillor Ron Ward who represents Blaby District and Braunstone Town Council has suggested that a separate parish council is formed to cover Thorpe Astley, and residents have been asked to give their views by 15th October 2011.

A map showing the area which would be covered by the new parish council is available at www.blaby.gov.uk/taconsultation.

Letters have been sent to all households in BraunstoneTown and Thorpe Astley with more information on the plans and how people can have their say.

Copies of the information sheets are also available from Braunstone Civic Centre and Thorpe Astley Community Centre.

Cllr Ward has said a parish council for Thorpe Astley would better serve the interests of people living there and help create a sense of identity for the area.

Braunstone Town Council has said it is against the plan but recognises the need to review the distribution of its council seats to properly reflect the population spread of the area.

The proposal has significant implications as each council would need their own staff to support them and run the services they provide.

People can comment online (www.blaby.gov.uk/taconsultation), by email (taconsultation@blaby.gov.uk) or by returning the response slips attached to their letter.
