With many of our local pubs being turned into flats or houses, it is always pleasant to discover a pub that has been turned into something altogether more useful, whilst still providing the traditional pub services.

One such pub is the Plough at Enderby, which is now the very good Indian restaurant "Aspects at the Plough".

The Plough first opened as an Indian restaurant late last year and has been doing a very good trade since. It has had a complete makeover and gone is the dark wood of the pub, to be replaced by white washed wood and bright light fittings.

The overall effect is airy and fresh. The restaurant is designed so that in busy times the whole space can be used for serving meals, whilst when it is quieter, there is more seating just for drinking. The toilets have also had a makeover with modern sinks and fresh clean tiling.

The menu is a mix of authentic traditional Indian food with some newer recipes for those who want to try something a little different. There is also a range of English dishes, which includes such English classics as lasagne!

The Indian food is so good there is no need to try the non spicy food, but it does mean the restaurant can accommodate groups where one or two people do not like spicy food for whatever reason.

We started with two mixed platters; one meat, one vegetarian. Both were good, fresh tasting and with enough spice to give a tang without being overpowering.

The main courses were also of a high standard. The goan fish curry consists of moist fish and a rich sauce with a bite of lime in it. The dhansak had a thick rich sauce which went perfectly with the nan bread and rice.

All the dishes are served on individual burners which means it is kept hot until it is all gone, but it does not dry out the food. Not only was the food of a very high standard, but the cutlery to eat it with was weighty and stylish.

The service throughout was unobtrusive and attentive, the beer seemed to keep coming (Pedigree in deference to the pub tradition) which did make for a interesting walk home.

The after meal coffees were freshly made with a choice of what is now the usual list of coffee and tea was also available. One tiny complaint however is that the tea could have been better presented than a tea bag in a cup. The tea pot, jug of milk and sugar is such a pleasant ritual at the end of a meal.

The meal itself was so enjoyable that the Rod Stewart look-alike was neither a distraction nor an addition, but it was a nod for the purists of the traditional pub entertainment.

Overall a meal at Aspects is a very enjoyable night out, and whilst not cheap, it is value for money and is a very welcome addition to the choice of eating and drinking places in Enderby.
