A proposal to split Braunstone Town and Thorpe Astley into separate council areas has been put forward by a local councillor.
Councillor Ron Ward, who represents Blaby district and Braunstone Town Council, has suggested that a separate parish council is formed to cover Thorpe Astley, and residents are now being asked their views on the idea.
Letters are being sent to all households in Braunstone Town and Thorpe Astley with more information on the plans and how they can have their say.
Copies of the information sheets are also available from Braunstone Civic Centre and Thorpe Astley Community Centre.
Cllr Ward has said a parish council for Thorpe Astley would better serve the interests of people living there and help create a sense of identity for the area.
Braunstone Town Councilhas said it is against the plan but recognises the need to review the distribution of its council seats to properly reflect the population spread of the area.
The proposal has significant implications as each council would need to have their own staff to support them and run the services they provide.
A map showing the area which would be covered by the new parish council is available at www.blaby.gov.uk/taconsultation.
People can comment online (www.blaby.gov.uk/taconsultation), by email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or by returning the response slips attached to their letter.
The deadline for responses is 15th October 2011.
