Free swimming set to continue at Enderby Leisure Centre

26 July 2010

Free swimming is continuing at Enderby Leisure Centre after Blaby District Council and SLM (Sports and Leisure Management), who run the facility, pledged their support for the scheme.

Government funding for the project ends on July 31 but the Council and SLM have funded the programme for an additional two months, meaning people aged 16 and under and 60 or over can swim for free through the summer.

After September 30 all children enrolled on swimming lessons at the centre on Mill Lane will be able to swim for free during public sessions and two sessions a week will be set aside for people aged 60 or over to swim for free.

Councillor Karl Coles, portfolio holder for health and community services at the Council said:

“This announcement is fantastic news for the local community and it shows our dedication to making swimming accessible to as many people as possible.

“We have managed to extend the current free swim initiative until the end of September and people will still be able to swim for free after that.”

Figures have shown that the free swim scheme had a positive affect on the amount of people taking up the sport with an increase of more than 70% in the number of people attending under 16 swimming sessions and a 25% increase in the 60 and over sessions.

Martin Miles, contract manager for SLM said:

“Summer is our busiest time of year for casual swimming, particularly during the school holidays so it’s great that we are able to continue this offer which will benefit a lot of local families. “
