A group of councillors tasked with reviewing the decisions of their local authority have been named runners up Scrutiny Team of the Year by a charity promoting accountability in government.
Blaby District Council’s Scrutiny Commission, made up of 18 district councillors and supported by two officers, was shortlisted for the award by the Centre for Public Scrutiny for its work in the community.
In spring 2010 the panel took part in a review of car parking charges in Blaby to make sure local business owners and residents were being listened to.
The commission also listened to parish council concern about the way the authority dealt with the Section 106 process of securing planning obligations from developers. They worked at making the process more open and transparent and asked for a strategy to be adopted which clearly set out the council’s position regarding Section 106 funds.
Recent changes to Scrutiny have provided a more structured focus to support the Council’s drive for improvement resulting in a greater impact on council decisions.
A scrutiny review of the authority’s website helped inform a major redesign which saw a large increase in people visiting the site for information on services.
Councillor Geoff Welsh, Chairman of the Scrutiny Commission said:
“For a small team we have done fantastically well to get shortlisted for team of the year so I’m really proud of everyone.
“It’s vital that we continue to make sure decisions made by this council are having a positive impact on people’s lives.”
The Council is now looking for people who may want to attend scrutiny meetings or put forward topics to investigate.
