Sports clubs, youth groups and charities have been awarded nearly £20,000 in the latest round of community grants from Blaby District Council.

The grants, ranging from £200- £5,000 were given to 19 different organisations in total.

Stoney Stanton Lawn Tennis Club were given cash to help recruit more youngsters and Narborough Parish Council walked away with £5,000 towards new play equipment for the park on Hardwicke Road.

Bill Kittle, tennis club chairman said;

“We want to get the whole community playing tennis and this cash helps us to reach out to people who might be interested in taking up the sport.

“We have already used part of the money to enrol two youngsters on a training programme for coaches and we will be going into schools and youth groups to get them playing more tennis.”

The grants, which are given to not-for-profit community groups that want to expand or develop their services are funded by Blaby District Council and allocated by Community Action Blaby District on their behalf.

Councillor Ted Webster-Williams, portfolio holder for community partnerships and engagement at Blaby District Council said:

“This funding allows local groups to continue their excellent work. There are so many people doing amazing things throughout Blaby district so it’s great that they’re being supported.”

Groups are now being invited to apply for the next round of funding by 27 August 2010.
