Enderby residents, together with others in the Blaby district, are enjoying the cleanest streets in Leicestershire according to a report issued by the GMB union.
The clean streets league table, which is compiled from figures sent in by each local authority in 2008/09 show Blaby has the lowest amount of detritus and litter out of the county’s eight council areas.
Only 1 per cent of streets in the district were classed as having an unacceptable amount of litter, with just 9 per cent of land and highways assessed falling below the acceptable standard for detritus.
Whilst Blaby has the best figures among the eight Councils within the County, it ranked 20th out of a total of 39 East Midland Councils featured in the report.
The results are in stark contrast to three years ago when Blaby was named the dirtiest area in the East Midlands.
Council leaders and staff have attributed the turnaround to working in partnership with Leicestershire County Council and Tarmac on an innovative one pass approach to cleaning highways.
Tarmac is contracted by the county council to maintain highways across the whole of Leicestershire but in Blaby the work is sub contracted to the district council who litter pick highways and verges before and after grass cutting.
