Tanning salons - health warning

23 June 2010

 xx

Health and Safety Officers will be visiting tanning salons to give owners top tips on keeping the public safe following growing concerns about the use of sunbeds.

Health organisations have linked sunbed use to rising levels of skin cancer and from April 2011 under 18’s will be banned from using tanning salons in England.

The law is already in force in Scotland.

Officers are warning that the following groups are particularly at risk and should not use UVR tanning devices:

  • Under 18s
  • People with fair or freckly skin
  • Those who burn easily or have a lot of moles
  • People with a personal or family history of skin cancer
  • Anyone using medication which increases sensitivity to UV radiation

Councillor Karl Coles, health and community services portfolio holder at the Council said:

“Young people who use sunbeds excessively run the risk of developing skin cancer later in life so we need to work with salons and the public to educate people on the risks they are taking.”

A recent Cancer Research UK study showed that 250,000 11 to 17-year-olds in England are risking skin cancer by using UV tanning devices.

Blaby District Council’s Environmental Health Team will now be contacting businesses to ensure that they are aware of these new warnings. For more information please contact the team on 272 7555 or email env.health@Blaby.gov.uk
