Four community safety partnerships across South Leicestershire have joined forces to launch a public safety campaign for the World Cup.
The theme of the campaign is to ask members of the public to enjoy the football – but don’t use it as an excuse for misbehaviour.
The community safety partnerships are made up of police, district and county councils, the fire service, youth and voluntary groups covering Blaby, Harborough, Hinckley and Bosworth, and Oadby and Wigston.
They launched the campaign today (Monday June 7) by unveiling three themed posters, which were chosen by members of the Leicestershire Youth Council. These contain the slogans “Give domestic violence the boot this World Cup”, “When it kicks off, don’t be led, stay cool”, and “They think – it’s all over – it is now” (with an image of an offender in handcuffs).
Extra police will be on patrol during England matches and immediately afterwards. Officers will be issuing “yellow cards” alongside dispersal notices under the Violent Crime Reduction Act to those whose presence is believed likely to lead to an alcohol-related crime. Just as in football, further misbehaviour once the yellow card has been issued could lead to the person’s enforced removal (in this case with an arrest).
Officers have also written to licensed premises, reminding landlords of their responsibility to maintain order during televised matches.
Members of the Street Pastor groups will also carry out patrols to talk to distressed supporters and members of the public. They will be handing out football themed lollies and packets of mints, carrying the slogan “keep cool”.
Local authorities will also have extra support for anyone reporting domestic violence, including in some cases officers based in police stations to help a rapid response.
The police and Leicestershire County Council will broadcast football-themed public safety messages to users of Bluetooth mobile phones.
Pubs and clubs will be offered beer mats with similar messages.
The county council will also be cracking down on those attempting to sell counterfeit items such as fake football shirts.
