The Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire was greeted by Blaby District Council’s new chairman on Tuesday, May 26th prior to taking a tour of a life saving community garden scheme in Enderby.
Lady Gretton, the Queen’s representative in the county, was met by Councillor Barry Garner as she arrived at A Place to Grow, on Mill Lane, to meet volunteers and people who have benefited from the innovative project being run by Community Action Blaby District.
One person using the scheme told the lord-lieutenant that it had saved his life and another described how she had just celebrated her first 12 months without being hospitalised for more than 20 years thanks to the garden.
Lady Gretton said:
“I had no idea all this was here but it really is such a fantastic place.”
The project was originally set up four years ago to help people suffering from mental health problems but now provides support for a wide range of groups across Blaby district.
A Place to Grow is a partnership project between Blaby District Council and Community Action Blaby District.
The aim of the project is to aid people’s recovery from mental illness through gardening and to promote a better understanding of the contribution outdoor exercise can make to a healthy life.
People who attend the garden can plant a wide range of fruit and vegetables whilst getting the chance to meet new people in a relaxing environment.
