Councillor Barry Garner was sworn in as chairman of Blaby District Council at their annual meeting on May 19.

The new chair, taking over from Cllr Alan Bailey, has chosen to support two local charities during his year in office, Community Action Fund for Youth (CAFFY) and Vista, the society for the blind.

CAFFY was founded in 1997 and assists groups and organisations within Blaby district to improve and expand activities and facilities available to young people by providing grants to eligible projects.

Vista is the main provider of services to nearly 6,000 registered blind and partially sighted people in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Their aim is to give visually impaired people the support they need to enjoy an independent life.

The 65-year-old district and county councillor has lived in Littlethorpe for 40 years and is undertaking his second term as chairman at the Council

Speaking about his new role Cllr Garner said:

“I am so excited about my year in office and hope to meet as many different people, businesses and voluntary organisations as I can.

“I will also do my best to raise awareness of the excellent work of both these charities as well as helping them with fundraising”.

Cllr Garner has three sons and has been involved with many different sports, social groups and charities while living in Blaby district.

He has been secretary of Narborough and Littlethorpe Football Club, and is currently vice president of the Leicestershire Scouts and chairman of CAFFY.

The outgoing chairman, Cllr Bailey, raised nearly £4,000 for Blaby District Befrienders during his term in office. The project is run by Community Action Blaby District and provides one to one support and friendship to older people who are physically frail or socially isolated.

The chairman is available to attend any events that groups and businesses may be planning over the next year - big or small.
