Appeal after three people die in collision

Lubbesthorpe Way, Braunstone, closed for over eight hours

10 May 2010

Officers from Leicestershire Constabulary’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit are appealing for witnesses after a collision left three people dead.

Police responded to reports of a collision at around 8.19pm on Saturday May 8 under the bridge on Lubbesthorpe Way, in nearby Braunstone.

Residents living nearby reported hearing a 'loud bang'.

Three cars were involved - a silver Toyota Celica which was travelling towards the A47, a green Chrysler Voyager people carrier and a white Vauxhall Corsa which were both travelling in the opposite direction.

The incident happened when the Celica went across the carriageway resulting in a collision between it and the two other cars.

The two men in the Celica, a 53-year-old father and son who was in his 20s, received fatal injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene. They were both from Leicester.

A 12-year-old girl from Leicester who had been a passenger in the people carrier was taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary where she was pronounced dead. The girl’s 35-year-old mother, who was the driver, and her 15-year-old sister were taken to the Leicester Royal Infirmary where their conditions are described as serious.

Formal identification has not yet taken place so the names of those who died will not be released until this has been completed.

The 40-year-old driver of the Corsa and his 12-year-old daughter were not injured in the collision.

To allow emergency services to deal with the collision, Lubbesthorpe Way was closed and re-opened at around 5am Sunday May 9.

Sergeant Ivan Stafford, who is investigating the incident, said:

“This is a terrible tragedy that has left three people dead including a young girl.

“We have spoken to a number of people who witnessed the incident to try and piece together exactly what happened.

"However, I would ask that anyone who saw the Celica in the area just prior to the incident or who witnessed the collision to come forward."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact Leicester (0116) 222 2222 and quote incident 634:8.
