Youngsters at a Whetstone primary school have been learning about the importance of health and safety in the construction industry courtesy of local property developer, Westleigh Developments.
As part of Health and Safety Week at St Peter’s Primary School on Wale Road, ten pupils from Year 5 recently made the short journey to The Dicken, where Westleigh has recently completed work on 28 new affordable homes.
On arrival the students were given a tour by Westleigh Health and Safety Manager, Steve Dudman, who then answered a range of questions from the intrigued youngsters about the development.
An additional event saw Westleigh Production Manager Mark Stuart visit the school to speak to younger pupils from Years 2 and 3, aged 6 to 8, about life in the construction industry.
Joanna Scott, Assistant Headteacher at St Peter’s, says;
"We’d like to thank Westleigh for taking part in our Health and Safety Week.
"The trip to The Dicken was a great experience for the children and helped them to understand the potential risks of building sites."
Steve Dudman comments;
"We were delighted to take part in Health and Safety Week at St Peter’s Primary School as we at Westleigh strongly believe it is important for pupils to learn about the dangers that a building site can hold and all the relevant health and safety measures that we have to follow whilst working.
"The students who visited The Dicken were very attentive throughout their visit and were full of very thoughtful questions, as were the younger children whom Mark spoke to. We hope that everyone finished the week having learnt some valuable health and safety lessons."
