Museum exhibition is 'Taking to the Roads'

03 March 2010

An exhibition - telling the story of Leicestershire’s roads and transport and entitled ‘Taking to the roads’ - will begin a tour of Leicestershire museums this week.

Later in the year it will tour around other venues across the county, including libraries.

The exhibition will look at the history of the county’s roads from Prehistoric times through Roman road building, to present day transportation themes such as road safety and public transport.

The road safety section of the exhibition will spark a few memories as it features childhood heroes from the Tufty Club, and 70s favourite the Green Cross Code man.

The touring exhibition will also have a construction themed play area and quizzes for children to take part in.

Lesley Pendleton, County Council Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, said:

"This is the first time that the Environment and Transport department has put together a museum exhibition. Roads and transport affect everybody’s lives so there is something here for everyone."

David Sprason, Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities, said:

"We hope that people are inspired by the exhibits. Some of the themes are very topical - including a section about gritting the roads and keeping the traffic moving in bad weather - which we have had plenty of so far this year!"

Peter Lewis, Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure at Charnwood Borough Council, said:

"Our museum in Charnwood is an incredibly popular venue, especially for young people and I’m sure they’ll be thrilled to experience this brilliant exhibition. This is another example of County and Borough teaming up for something really special."

The first museum on the exhibition’s journey is Charnwood Museum in Loughborough, where it will remain from March 6th until April 25th. It will then travel to Snibston Discovery Park (on show from Saturday 1st May). Taking to the roads’ third stop will be at the Leicestershire Records Office in Wigston, from Monday 5th July.

The exhibition is supported by Tarmac.
