A hotel owner who put up bright lights in a conservation area has been fined £3000 after ignoring council pleas to remove them.
Jitesh Badiani who owns the Heritage Hotel on Leicester Road, Narborough, erected the lights in 2008 without planning permission, and was issued with an enforcement notice from Blaby District Council ordering they be taken down within two months.
Mr Badiani appealed the notice but planning inspectors who visited the site found the lights ‘garish’ and ‘poorly designed’ and agreed they should be removed to preserve the tranquil character of the conservation area. However, by January 2010, 15 months after the first request, the lights were still shining bright.
Magistrates found the hotel owner guilty of breaching an enforcement notice on 3rd February 2010 and he was ordered to pay a fine and the council’s court costs, totalling £3092.50.
Andrew Etherington, planning enforcement team leader at Blaby District Council said:
"This sends a clear message to people that they must comply with planning laws and go about things in the proper way."
