Work has begun on a new Sure Start Children's Centre in Huncote to support parents who are bringing up young children in Enderby and throughout the District.

This afternoon, representatives from contractors GF Tomlinson Ltd joined with county and district councillors and officials in a brief ceremony to mark the event.

Addressing the group, Cllr. Ernie White described the project as a true community endeavour, drawing together resources at both County and District levels.

Cllr. White currently serves on the Cabinet at the County Council with the Community Services Portfolio and he is also the Leader at Blaby District Council.

The centre is a partnership between the district and county councils and is the first of five planned for the Blaby, Oadby and Wigston area.

It will be connected to the Pavilion on Sportsfield Lane, and is intended to join up a range of services aimed at helping families with children under five years old as part of the Government's Every Child Matters programme.

Parents and carers will be able to access healthcare and early learning services at the centre as well as advice on parenting, managing money and getting back into work.

In addition, the Sure Start programme offers support for parents on topics including breastfeeding and weaning, speech and language development, special needs, post natal depression, domestic violence and behaviour management.

Councillor Janet Forey, children and young person's champion at Blaby District Council said:

"The new centre at Huncote is an exciting opportunity to bring together leisure and community facilities on one site which can share resources.

"It is also a fantastic chance for families to access a range of activities in one place."

The building will also be used as a base for outreach workers visiting families' across Blaby, Oadby and Wigston.

Ivan Ould, Leicestershire County Council's cabinet member for the children and young people's service, said:

"This development has been achieved by so many organisations sharing a common goal.

"By offering these services this tremendous facility will ensure that the community thrives."

By September 2010 there will be 42 children's centres across Leicestershire as part of a £16million countywide programme.

The centres will be available to parents and carers from pregnancy right through to when a child starts primary school.

The Sure Start programme in Blaby and Oadby and Wigston has been funded through Leicestershire County Council and Blaby District Council manages the Sure Start scheme across the Blaby, Oadby and Wigston area.
