Hate crime helpline launched

An anti-social behaviour and hate helpline has been launched by Blaby District Council to encourage victims to come forward and report incidents that are affecting their quality of life.

The number (0116 272 7677) has been launched as part of the countywide Stop and Tell campaign which ran from January 25 - 29 to raise awareness of what a hate incident is and how people can report them.

Anyone who feels they have been targeted in Blaby district because of their disability, age, gender identity, race, religion, belief or sexual orientation can call the helpline.

Councillor Ted Webster-Williams, community partnerships and engagement portfolio holder for the district council said:

"It is important that anyone living, working or visiting Blaby can go about their business without being harassed or targeted.

"This helpline will allow us to investigate any reports of hate incidents that take place within the council’s borders and deal with any perpetrators".

Events took place across Blaby throughout the week to get people thinking about hate. Council officers visited community groups, schools, libraries and members of the travelling community to talk to people about what they should do if they are being targeted.

A hate incident can be physical, verbal or written abuse where someone has been targeted because they are seen as being different.

They can be reported by a victim, witness or third party.
