The official opening of a newly refurbished toilet block in Blaby took place at lunch time today (Thursday 21st January).
A number of civic dignitaries and council workers, together with passers-by watched bemused as Cllr. Garner cut the 'tape' (a length of stretched-out loo roll!) and declared the facility officially open.
Blaby District Council improved and extended the public conveniences in Johns Court car park after asking 500 people what changes they thought should be made to the tired looking facility.
Baby changing facilities, sensor controlled taps and eco-friendly solar lighting are just some of the features which have now been installed to bring the facility up to date.
The toilets are situated behind the Johns Court shopping precinct and are open from 8am-6pm Monday - Saturday.
Addressing the onlookers, Cllr. Garner said the refurbishment of the Johns Court facility was part of the Council's Car Parking Strategy, which saw charges introduced last year for people using car parks across the district and this is now helping to fund improvements to car park facilities.
Councillor Jackie Dickinson, portfolio holder for growth, development and assets was unable to be present at the opening but spoke earlier saying:
"It is important that we continue to improve amenities for all those using Blaby town centre and these toilets should make life a lot easier for disabled people, the elderly and parents with young children."
Blaby resident Jane Medhurst who witnessed the event along with her son Jacob who is almost 3yrs old, said she was 'suitably impressed':
"It's good to know that we have got somewhere nice in the village to take youngsters. Jacob is not long since out of nappies but it's nice that there is a clean and tidy facility near the shops".
