Winter weather advice

14 January 2010

All agencies in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland are working together during the cold weather to keep people safe and the local area moving.

Disruption is being kept to a minimum but people are urged to remember the important messages below.

Drivers should familiarise themselves with gritted routes and stick to the main roads. Please see 'winter driving' link (below) for more information.

Adapt your driving style to the conditions and remember:

  • Conditions can change very quickly. If they are hazardous, consider whether your journey is really necessary
  • To plan your journey
  • To allow extra time
  • To avoid braking sharply
  • To be aware of vehicles around you
  • Look out for vulnerable neighbours, family members or friends who may need help with shopping and other daily living tasks. Please see 'social care' link (below) for more on social care services during severe weather.
  • Only visit the Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary if you have a genuine health emergency. Think about if there is an alternative place you can go to such as an NHS walk-in centre and remember to wear suitable footwear if venturing out. For more, please see link below.
  • Frozen water is not safe and children and adults should keep off it at all times. Owners should either avoid walking their pets near frozen water or make sure dogs are kept on leads.
