The Squash Club at The Pavilion, Huncote, run by Coach Kathy Smith, has received a prestigious award, The Squash England Silver Charter Mark.

Andy Hastings, Squash England's Area Development Manager for the East Midlands, visited the centre on May 7th to carry out an assessment of the facilities and the Squash club's activities.

The Centre already held a Bronze Charter Mark, however following the recent refurbishment work at the Pavilion and Kathy's work to introduce more members and new leagues, the centre was encouraged to apply for the Silver Standard.

Clubs apply to England Squash for a Charter mark by completing a "Club Health Check" which allows them to identify their own strengths and areas where the Area Squash Managers can offer support.

Last year, all the squash courts at the Pavilion had new lights fitted and one court had its walls resurfaced, floors sanded and new lines and markings applied, making The Pavilion one of the best local authority owned squash facilities in the area.

Commenting on the award, Andy Hastings said:

"I am delighted to be able to award the England Squash Club Charter award to Kathy and The Pavilion.

"The Club Charter award is a sign of a quality Squash Club and demonstrates that the club has strong coaching and effective management in place and that it takes issues such as equality and child protection seriously."

Exemplary coaching

Andy went on to say the Squash Club run by Kathy is exemplary in its coaching and social programme with a healthily supported internal league structure and social evenings, and a comprehensive coaching programme for both adults and junior player of all ages.

"There is also a new Racketball programme being introduced at the Centre", he said.

"Hopefully that will entice many more people into participating in sport at the Pavilion's excellent and recently upgraded facilities."

Councillor Ted Webster-Williams, Cabinet member with responsibility for Community Focus said:

"The upgrading of the facilities at the Pavilion has been good news for everyone who uses the centre.

"Squash players in particular have benefited greatly from the improvements and we are delighted that this has been formally recognised by England Squash.

"Our Coach Kathy Smith must also be congratulated for her excellent work in promoting Squash at The Pavilion."

The English Squash Charter

  • Qualified and fully insured coaches
  • Coaches and officials who have adopted the England Squash Child Protection Policy and Procedures
  • Been approved to deliver the England Squash National Coaching Scheme
  • Experience in developing links with local schools
  • Excellent coaching and competitive programmes accommodating all levels of ability
