Construction Equipment firm's £30,000 charity donation

Desford company adopts Steps Conductive Education Centre at Shepshed

07 March 2008

A division of Caterpillar, the construction industry giant, based in Desford, has adopted Shepshed charity Steps as its charity of the year.

The Building Construction Products (BCP) division at Caterpillar, which assembles small construction equipment, chose to support Steps under the Caterpillar Cares programme.

Steps is a countrywide charity, providing specialist support to children with motor disorders, enabling them to lead fuller, more active lives.

The charity, founded in the mid-nineties, offers support to families and parents, as well as an education for the children who attend the Shepshed Centre. The charity is managed by volunteer trustees and committee members.

Many of those helped by the charity have cerebral palsy, Down syndrome, or chromosome deficiency. Some also have secondary characteristics, such as visual or hearing impairment, communication problems or learning difficulties.

By helping the children develop their physical, emotional, intellectual and personal skills in a relaxed learning environment, the charity works to ease their integration into school and their own community, allowing them to live more independently.

Leicestershire Fitness guru Rosemary Conley is patron of the charity and said of the donation that Steps changes children's lives for the better, and the donation "will dramatically help the charity towards a more sustainable future".

Managing Director of BCP Europe, Richard Cooper, said that by adopting Steps as their charity of the year, they are able to offer practical help as well as financial support.

"We were impressed by the work that they do" he said, adding that the company wished to support Steps in recruiting a fund-raiser, among other activities.

For Steps, one of the charity's founders, Heather Crate said: "This donation will help continue the services we currently offer and also develop new ones."

STEPS is a registered charity number 1063143 and opportunities exist to contribute from individual donation to corporate sponsorship.
