Firefighters are urging shoppers at Asda, Fosse Park to 'Pull Your Finger Out'

Firefighters will be at Asda, Fosse Park, Enderby from 10am - 4pm on Thursday 28th February and Friday 29th February talking to shoppers about the risks of fire in the home and urging them all to fit and maintain smoke alarms.

Also helping Firefighters will be Sarah Goldman. Ms. Goldman had a fire in her home in Wigston on 8 January 2008.

Fortunately both she and her three children that were in the house at the time, escaped unharmed. Ms Goldman and her family were able to escape unharmed as a smoke alarm, that had previously been fitted by firefighters from Wigston Fire and Rescue Station, activated and woke all the children upstairs.

Ms Goldman is now keen to tell others of her experience and how she and her children are lucky to escape unharmed.

Firefighters will be present at the main entrance to Asda with fire engines and a portable home fire safety unit.

The unit is mocked up inside to look like a typical home and is used to demonstrate common fire safety hazards.

Shoppers will then be able to purchase smoke alarms in the store with money off vouchers given to them by firefighters.

Firefighters will also be giving out free mugs, key rings and pens with a stark reminder on them to prompt people to test their smoke alarms.

People considered being most vulnerable to the risks of fire, such as the elderly and disabled will also be offered free home fire safety checks.

Firefighters will visit people in their own home, install free smoke alarms and advise people as to the risks in their own home.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service have smoke detectors that can be fitted at the same time as a Home Fire Safety Check and they are particularly trying to target vulnerable groups in the community.

If you would like to find out more about Home Fire Safety Checks then please call 0116 287 2241 to ask for a visit. It is all free and it could save your life if there is a fire in your home.
