The story (Thursday 31 January) of a two-car collision outside the Police Headquarters on the B4114 at Enderby, highlighted the nightmare faced by traffic as a result. (» read item).
Many people were unable to get to work, school children were left waiting in the bitter-cold for their school buses and were unable to go to school as a result.
The financial loss to employers must have been substantial.
The gridlock caused chaos within a five mile radius and extended onto the M1 Motorway.
This is the location Leicester City and Leicestershire County Council want to site a Park and Ride. If a two-car collision can cause a five hour gridlock, just image what mayhem will be caused when large numbers of Christmas shoppers try to access this area.
The majority of residents living in Enderby, Narborough, Whetstone, Blaby, Littlethorpe, Cosby and the whole surrounding area are opposed to the Park and Ride because of its close proximity to the Motorway junction and because development of the area is still incomplete.
Enderby village belongs to Enderby residents not the City or County Council.
When will Leicestershire County Council show some common sense and realise that this location is not suitable for a Park and Ride.
The road structure can't cope with a two-car collision so there is no way it will be able to cope with a Park and Ride, but hey this is Leicestershire County Council, why should they worry, they don't live in the area, so why should they be bothered about the havoc they are about to cause.
So, where are these 'forward thinking' and 'caring' Councils?
The Leicester Mercury, reporting on the incident in their issue of 31st January, said:/p>
The closure of the road - while the vehicles were recovered and the crash scene was examined - caused huge delays for more than two hours for commuters in the west part of the city.
Sally Hurst, of area traffic control, said queues started building up at about 7.20am and only began to clear about three hours later.
She said: "It was completely solid, horrendous. There were queues from the Foxhunter roundabout in every direction. Enderby, Narborough and Blaby took quite a bad hit, as well as the A47 and Aylestone Road. It has been bad all over that side of the city this morning. Even when the road was reopened it took about an hour to clear up because of the weight of traffic."
Chef Janine Shirley, who works at the Toby Carvery on the Foxhunter roundabout, decided to walk to work from her home in Enderby village after hearing about the problems.
She said: "It was really bad - the traffic was at a standstill earlier in the morning. At about 10am it finally started to get moving again.
"It took my neighbour 30 minutes to get from the roundabout into Enderby village."
A police spokesman said: "It is a busy route, so there has obviously been congestion with the road closure."
