On Sunday 24th June a number of people braved the showery weather to attend an open event staged by Enderby Heritage Group at the ancient site of Aldeby

Members of the group were on hand to present and explain some of their research into the history of the site.

The site is said to be the home of the first church in the area we currently know as Enderby, built (by best estimate) around 800 AD

Throughout the history of the site the church building underwent more than one incarnation.

Tony Nicholson of the Heritage Group explained that the site was generally overrun with grass and nettles, but the District Council had kindly strimmed away the growth to expose some of the stone remains.

These remains describe an outline of the shape and extent of the building.

During a 1950's excavation of the 'second' Aldeby church, items were found that included a sculptured stone which was subsequently dated by the British Museum as having been carved around 950 AD.

Mark Carne, Heritage Group member and author of several texts on the early churches of Enderby, was also on hand to explain and interpret the results of research undertaken by the Group.

Enderby Heritage Group are committed to preservation of the site and are currently keeping a close eye on nearby development proposals.
