New chairman chosen for District Council

Posted on May 23, 2013May 23, 2013 by staff

Councillor Alan Tanner was sworn in as chairman of Blaby District Council at the annual meeting on May 21.

The new chair is taking over from Councillor Jill Blackwell and has chosen to support Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre (Mablethorpe) and 4Ward Strokes Leicester during his term in office.

Leicester Children’s Holiday Centre (Mablethorpe) provides an invaluable opportunity for children in need to enjoy an activity filled holiday.

For the past hundred years the centre has been providing holidays (free of charge) for children who otherwise would not know the simple pleasures of a stress-free-two week vacation.

4Ward Strokes Leicester is a voluntary support group aimed at caring for and helping stroke survivors of working age, their families, carers, friends and anyone who knows them. It has been together for over three years and provides people with somewhere to chat over a cup of tea or coffee whilst sharing experiences and problems.

“I am honoured to take over from Councillor Blackwell and thrilled to be the new chairman. I will attempt to serve this Council well in the coming year and feel this is my chance to say thanks to the people who have supported me.”

Councillor Tanner has represented the Cosby and South Whetstone ward on Blaby District Council for 14 years.

His work experience includes starting his own business in 1969 as a heating engineer, plumber and builder, obtaining a City & Guilds and carrying out a full five year apprenticeship for Grocock and Day.

Councillor David Clements was named vice chairman for the year.

Outgoing chairman Councillor Blackwell raised £2,424 for Leicester Animal Aid and national charity the Cinnamon Trust during her term in office.

The chairman is available to attend any events, no matter how big or small, that groups and businesses may be planning over the next year.

To invite the chairman to an event or for more information on the role visit www.blaby.gov.uk/chairman , email civic@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 272 7512.
