Microchipping amnesty event

Posted on March 17, 2017 by staff

Residents are being invited to an identification event to ensure their dog is complying with the law, a year since legislation was introduced.

The FREE event hosted by Blaby District Council will give dog owners the chance to get their pet chipped and update the microchip’s details. The event takes place on Thursday 06 April from 10am-2pm at the Council’s offices, Desford Road, Narborough, LE19 2EP.

In April 2016 it became law across the UK for all dogs to be chipped with the up-to-date details of the owner, and for dogs. Failure to have a dog chipped is a criminal offence and owners could face a fine of £500.

Information about collar and tags will also be available, with the law stating that every dog must wear a collar with the name and address of the owner when in public.

The event was held last year just before the new law was introduced and proved popular with residents, who turned up in numbers to ensure their pooch had a microchip, with all details on the chip up to date.

Michelle Ikin, Senior Animal Services Officer at Blaby District Council, said: “We want to make sure that all dog owners in the District of Blaby are abiding by the law. Having a dog microchipped is a simple process which will take a few minutes and will help any organisation track the owner if a lost dog is handed into a shelter.”

For more information about the event e-mail animal.services@blaby.gov.uk or call 0116 275 0555. Details and advice about dogs can be found at www.blaby.gov.uk/dogs.
