Leicestershire County Council is the top-tier council in Leicestershire and provides a wide range of services to over 600,000 local people. It spends over £500 million a year.

A Cabinet makes executive decisions and the Council has a scrutiny process.

Fifty five democratically-elected County Councillors each represent their own local area.

At present there are 36 Conservative, 4 Labour, 14 Lib Dems. and 1 BNP.

Main responsibilities of the County Council:

• setting the Budget and the Capital Programme
• deciding policies, objectives and priorities
• approving any changes in the above
• approving any changes to the Constitution
• appointing the Cabinet, Scrutiny Commission and all main bodies
• receiving reports from the Cabinet and Scrutiny bodies
• questioning: questions from individual members of the County Council can be asked of the Cabinet and Chairmen of Boards and Committees
• dealing with Notices of Motion - where members can raise issues for debate
