Over 120 young people from 17 schools in the district of Blaby battled it out for sporting honours on Sunday 10th July 2011 at the Leicestershire and Rutland Youth Games.

The Games, organised by Leicestershire and Rutland Sport were supported by DHL and The Courier, a Community Newspaper, covering Blaby, Glen Parva andWhetstone.  The countywide event provides the opportunity for 8-15 year olds to compete against children from 9 local authority areas.

There were 14 teams across 11 sports making up the Blaby District team.  The team won Year 5/6 Basketball, Year 7 Girls Football and won Fair Play Awards in Year 9/10 Badminton and Year 7/8 Table Tennis.

Blaby and Harborough School Sports Partnership also took part in the Leicester-Shire and Rutland Parallel Youth Games sponsored by DHL and The Courier on Friday 8th July. There were 3 teams entered into Aqua Skills, Invasion Games and Tri Golf. Blaby and Harborough won the Fair Play award for Aqua Skills.

Councillor David Jennings, Portfolio holder for Health and Community Services said:

“It’s fantastic to see a sporting event that gives participants with disabilities the chance to not only try many sporting activities, but also compete against other districts and boroughs across Leicestershire andRutland.

The results are a great achievement for the schools and the district, congratulations to all those who took part in the day.  A special thank you goes to the volunteers who helped out with managing the teams and Everyone Active at Enderby Leisure Centre and Blaby Local Sports Alliance who sponsored the Blaby team”
