23 February 2011 [Tournament Report by Simon Moody]
Home grown talent from the Enderby Dodgeball Club
The Leicester Team, who are home grown talent from The Enderby Dodgeball Club, were competing in just their second tournament.
At the first ever East Midlands tournament open in Derby, the team consisting of Billie Wright (Captain), Yasmin Hughes, Kat Hurren, Katie Suffolk, Megan Rose, Ting-Hin Tang and Coach Simon Moody had a day they would never forget!
In the Group Stage there were eight teams in the women’s draw and, in their group, the Ligresses faced Bedford Uni II, Derby Seahawks & NCD Dodgettes.
The first match was played against the Derby girls, who quickly gained a 1-0 lead over the Ligresses.
But a comeback from the Ligresses saw them take the next four games to win 4-1.
Next up were the NCD Dodgettes from Milton Keynes. The Dodgettes have been a dominant team in women’s Dodgeball – but with no fear the Ligresses stormed to a 5-0 victory with great team work of throwing and catching, resulting in a memorable win for the girls!
A Semi final place was now definitely on the cards. The Ligresses went on to finish strongly in their group as they took on Bedford Uni II for a place in the semi finals.
The Ligresses dismantled the team from Bedford 5-0, setting up the prospect of an entertaining semi final vs Southampton Uni Dodgettes – the current reigning National Champions.
Certainly a tough semi-final draw for the girls, but The Ligresses brilliantly took the match 4-1 to set up a final against the reigning University Champions Bedford University.
This was the second time the Ligresses had faced Bedford Uni I since London, when the Leicester girls won their match, giving them the mental edge on the girls from Bedford.
The final saw the Leicester girls up against the women’s 1st team from University of Bedford Bulls Dodgeball Club, giving the Ligresses their sternest test of the day.
The first game finished level, Bedford Bulls I then won a tough second game 2-0 and retained this lead as game three finished with three players each.
Leicester levelled the score with an emphatic 6-0 win in game four but went behind again as Bedford replied with a 5-2 game score.
With just two games remaining, in the best-of-seven final, the Ligresses made it 2 games all after winning game 6 and it all came down to the deciding seventh game.
Both teams went all out to get the win, taking some big catches and launching 2 and 3 player attacks as the game swung back and forth.
It was LC Ligresses who emerged victorious, taking the decider by six players to four. The celebration promptly followed!
Leicester City Ligresses have showed that they are a new force to be reckoned within women’s Dodgeball.
