Keep garden sheds and allotments safe this summer…

Posted on June 5, 2013 by staff

open shedLeicestershire Police are advising allotment holders, home owners and keen gardeners to keep their shed, garage and allotment safe and secure this summer.

Around this time of year there is often an increase in the number of break-ins to sheds and outbuildings. Many people store very expensive pieces of equipment in their sheds, such as bikes and tools, but don’t think to protect them in the same way they do their homes.

People can avoid being victims of crime by following a number of simple and inexpensive steps:-

– Put all tools away
– Secure a good quality lock on the shed door
– Fit a battery powered alarm
– Make sure that the door and door frame is solid, and replace any damaged or rotten areas
– Fit key-operated window locks on opening windows, or screw them permanently shut from the inside if they aren’t used

Superintendent Neil Castle said:

“It’s around this time of year that we see a seasonal increase in shed breaks. Burglars are not only breaking into the sheds and outbuildings for bikes and lawnmowers, but also to steal tools that will allow them to break into the home.”

“Shed breaks are down 14 per cent from last year following advice provided by the police, but people still need to be cautious and make sure they protect their sheds and the contents by locking them securely so we can bring this figure lower.”

Leaflets providing advice on how to keep your garden, shed, garage and allotment safe and secure have been sent to most DIY stores and garden centres across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.
