Blaby District Council is calling on people take part in the national Open Weekend in celebration of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games, from Friday 22 – Sunday 24 July.
Events are taking place across the district marking the one year countdown to the Games and everyone is being encouraged to get involved.
The Blaby 2012 Family Day is taking place at Bouskell Park on Sunday July 24 from 11am – 4pm and people are being given the chance to carry the 1948 London Olympic torch.
Anyone who wants to take part in the torch relay, or who wants to nominate someone to carry the torch should apply online at www.blaby.gov.uk/torchrelay by July 11.
Torch bearers must live in Blaby district and be over five years old. The relay starts at 1.30pm.
A lion dance and St George’s dragon performance will open the family day at 12noon followed by activities including face painting, crazy golf, story telling, zumba dancing and lots more.
A puppet show from 3pm – 4pm will be followed by a short ceremony to close the event.
Quin Quinney, health and community services manager at the Council said: “The Open Weekend is a great opportunity for people up and down the country to have fun, get inspired and join in the final countdown to the Olympics so I’d like to see everyone get involved.”
