Blaby Town Centre’s revitalisation continues apace after the opening date of Iceland was confirmed for January.
The new store will open on Tuesday 21 January as one of 45 new Iceland and The Food Warehouse stores that the company is launching across the country, with Iceland seeing Blaby Town Centre as an attractive location to expand.
As part of the opening and following discussions with Blaby District Council, Iceland will refund the two-hour, 30p parking charge in Enderby Road and Johns Court car parks when spending £5 or more in store. The 30p charge will return to both car parks when Iceland is officially opened.
A High Street Co-ordinator has also been appointed to continue the Council’s commitment to supporting local business and enriching the economy of the district. The role will include helping to promote and market Blaby Town Centre and the other centres in the district as well as linking businesses with key partners and finding any funding opportunities.
Councillor Terry Richardson, Leader of Blaby District Council, said: “We have worked with Iceland since they announced their intention to open to ensure we have a strong relationship, and we’re delighted they have decided to set up a Parking Ticket Refund Scheme.
“The Council acted quickly to offset the impact of Waitrose’s closure to ensure free parking was available to support local businesses. With Iceland’s opening, the appointment of a High Street Co-ordinator and moves to refresh the public areas we are confident Blaby Town Centre will continue to attract visitors and become a thriving local town centre.
Keith Hann, Director of Corporate Affairs at Iceland, said: “We are delighted to confirm that our store refit is going so well that we can bring our store opening a week forward.
“We have also been working closely with Blaby District Council who have supported the town centre businesses over the past few months through their temporary free parking offer for two hours; we understand that this was a temporary measure and will end once our store opens.
“So we are delighted to announce that we will be offering a refund for the two hour tariff for all customers who spend over £5 in store on presentation of the perforated voucher on each ticket. This offer will apply to both main car parks in the town centre and we hope will show our commitment to being part of the community and supporting all town centre businesses and visitors.”
