Huncote Hornets to host National BMX Championships

Posted on December 27, 2017December 27, 2017 by staff

Leicester Huncote Hornets, the BMX club based at Huncote Pavilion Leisure Centre, is set to host rounds three and four of the British Cycling National BMX Race Series.

The annual championship rounds will take place on 20th-22nd April 2018, with over 900 competitors and 3,000 spectators expected to visit the District of Blaby for the weekend. Riders aged from 6 years old, to World Championship and Olympic-standard will be competing.

Based in Huncote, the Hornets’ new, state-of-the-art £150,000 BMX track was opened in 2015 and is built to European-competition standards. It is hosting its first national championship rounds following a bidding process to the governing body, British Cycling.

British Cycling will livestream each round to an audience of over 100,000 people, with the track and Pavilion Leisure Centre taking centre stage as host to the competition and visitors to the area.

Mitch Barsby, Director at Leicester Huncote Hornets, said:

“We are so excited to be hosting our first national championship rounds next April. It gives us a chance to show off our incredible track to some of the best BMX riders in the country. We hope this to be the first of many big events at our track.

“There is a lot of work for us to do, but with the support from local businesses and Blaby District Council we will be ready to welcome the competitors and spectators across the weekend!”

Councillor Iain Hewson, Portfolio Holder for Health Improvement, Leisure & Regulatory Services, said:

“This is an incredible achievement for the Huncote Hornets, and we are delighted to be a part of hosting a national event and to welcome some of the best riders in the world.

“This will bring a large number of people to the district for the weekend which will be a fantastic opportunity for local communities, groups/clubs and schools interested in BMX cycling, as well as a boost to the local economy.”

The event is being funded entirely by the Huncote Hornets and supported by Blaby District Council.
