Have a Safer Summer 2014

Posted on July 26, 2014 by staff

play park imageThe annual campaign to ensure that everyone has a safe and enjoyable summer has begun.

With the summer upon us, the Leicestershire Anti-Social Behaviour Delivery Group, backed by the county council, is encouraging people to enjoy themselves but also be considerate to those around them.

Their top tips include:

  • Drink Safe and Stay Safe’ – don’t let alcohol ruin your or anyone else’s summer. Find out alcohol facts, including the number of calories and units in a drink, at: http://www.nhs.uk/Change4Life/Pages/benefits-drinking-less-alcohol.aspx
  • Be tolerant of young people who also want to enjoy the summer – playing ball games and being with their friends isn’t necessarily anti-social behaviour
  • Be considerate – if you’re planning an event or party avoid conflict and inform your neighbours beforehand
  • If you’re having a BBQ think safety first – “don’t let your summer crash and burn”
  • Don’t suffer in silence – report anti-social behaviour by calling 101 or by contacting your local district / borough council

As part of the group’s work they have contacted all schools across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland asking that pupils consider their behaviour and act responsibly whilst on holiday.

Councillor Maggie Wright, portfolio holder for Community Services, said:

“We want people to make the most of their summer and enjoy themselves with their friends and families.

“However, often at this time of year we also receive more reports of anti-social behaviour. We’ll be tweeting tips and advice throughout the summer months to help people stay safe, have fun but at the same time reminding them to be mindful of others.”

Superintendent Martyn Ball, police lead on anti-social behaviour, said:

“This summer we want to encourage people to respect and tolerate each other regardless of their age or background.

“We want everyone to have a good summer, particularly as they enjoy the nicer weather and lighter nights, but also to be aware of how their actions might impact on others.

“Our new Anti-Social Behaviour Response Cars will continue to patrol every evening throughout the summer tackling issues in hot spot areas and reassuring residents that the police and local councils are working together to deal with any problems.”
