A memorial for Blaby District Council’s former leader Ernie White will take place at Fosse Meadows on Thursday 22 August.
Ernie White led Blaby District Council for 11 years and was hugely respected for his incredible service to the community and in the ward of Stanton and Flamville, covering Sapcote, Sharnford and Stoney Stanton, the villages he represented as a District Councillor for so many years.
First elected as a District Councillor in 1983, he became leader of the Council in August 2004 until he stood down as a Councillor in 2015. Ernie was also a County Councillor for more than 40 years.
When stepping down in 2015, Ernie summed up his 11 years as leader by saying: “(We grew) in confidence and ambition, opened ourselves up to challenge, become focussed on the priorities of our communities and become determined to make a difference through what we do and how we do it.
“We are very ambitious for our area, and focussed on doing our very best for the people living, working and visiting the District and for the businesses that are based within our boundaries. We strive to do the right things, do them quickly and not let bureaucracy, dogma or pessimism stop us.”
After his sad passing in January 2018 and in agreement with Ernie’s family, the Council has created a quiet area for reflection at Fosse Meadows in his memory and will be placing a commemorative stone at the spot on the chosen date which would have been Ernie’s 78th birthday.
Local granite stone for the memorial has been donated from Croft quarry by Aggregate Industries, as Ernie was a valued member of the Liaison Committee.
Any member of the public wishing to attend the short, informal event will be welcome; it will begin at 12:30pm.

Please note that from the car park the memorial location is a walk of approximately a quarter of a mile. Visitors are welcome to bring friends and family to the event, and to enjoy the park before and after the ceremony.
