Enderby Senior Band finish the year on a high

Enderby Senior BandMembers of the Enderby Senior Band are reflecting on a pleasing end to the year’s activities, and are looking forward to using the recent run of good contest results to build as they prepare to defend their 1st section midlands regional title in 2015.

In a news item on the Band’s newly revamped website, the organisation reports:

After a disappointing placing at the national finals in September, the band have been extremely busy, fitting in two appearances at Leicester’s prestigious Curve Theatre, organising and performing their own remembrance concert, leading the remembrance parade through the village of Enderby, entertaining the crowds before the recent Leicester Tiger’s European Cup game at Welford Road, and competing at Wychavon, Leicester and Milton Keynes contests.

The hard work and commitment of the players and musical director, Simon Jones paid off with a third placing in the 1st section at Leicester and fourth place in a combined 1st and championship section at Milton Keynes, being the highest placed 1st section band and beating several established championship outfits along the way.

After the contests Simon reflected on a hectic period for the band:

‘Our preparation for the Autumn contests started a couple of months ago and was managed alongside a busy concert schedule. Whilst it would have been amazing to have retained our Leicester title, the main thing is that we were generally happy with our performance of English Heritage and ultimately felt our 3rd place was well earned. The band worked hard to improve things we felt could be better and  we were well rewarded with a 4th place at Milton Keynes in a section dominated by championship section bands – a fantastic result for any 1st section band!’

The band rounded off the year with their Christmas Concert on Monday 15th December, before taking a short break over the Christmas Holidays, picking up the contesting baton again in January at Butlin’s, and then working towards the defence of their Midlands Regional Title.

Simon is very happy with the progress the band has made under his leadership, since he was appointed Musical Director in June 2013 and commented:

‘In my 18 months with Enderby Senior Band, a commitment to well-structured preparation and solid performances on the contest stage have helped us enjoy some good results, including a couple of wins along the way. Results haven’t always been on our side, but that is the way it goes sometimes – contest results in isolation don’t tell the whole story – and so our focus has to be on ensuring we continue to build and promote a culture of development and sustainability. Going into the Area next year we’ll have a full 3 point lead on the next highest placed band in our section, and of course that’s a really good position for us to be in.’

Enderby Band’s revamped website is now up and running

In fact, 2014 has been a bright year for the whole Enderby Band Organisation, which encompasses five bands containing over one hundred musicians of all abilities and ages.

Earlier this year Enderby Concert Band won first prize in their section at the Wood Farm Brewery Contest and a band made up of players from the Organisation’s Youth Band and Concert Band successfully retained not only the unregistered section title at Leicester Contest, but also the best soloist prize too.

The Organisation’s ongoing commitment to player training is bearing fruits with several players moving up from the Junior Band to the Youth Band, and from the Youth Band into the Senior Band.
