Following advice from Leicestershire Libraries to all its Community Managed Libraries, Enderby Library will close for an unspecified period from 6pm this evening (Wednesday 18th March).
In a Coronavirus update Community Library managers were told the situation was being continually monitored.
The update said that following a number of emergency meetings yesterday that followed the Government’s revised guidance, a range of closures had been agreed in order to mitigate the spread of the virus with immediate effect.
The County Council is closing its shopping centre libraries. Largest libraries will remain open, but will be reviewed as the situation develops. The likelihood is that they will close at some point in the near future.
All book loans have been extended until 1st May and this will be reviewed at a later date and extended if necessary.
The update said that readers are encouraged to take a supply of books to last them through these uncertain times by using open libraries at Wigston Magna and Oadby.
“We’ll miss the groups….”
Some regular users of the Library’s groups took to social media to express sorrow at the closure.
Ema Abreu Witts wrote on All Things Enderby “ohhh no. We love the Library thare goes our Mondays” – a sentiment shared by Nikki Thomas who commented: “Oh no. I go to Busy Hands group every Monday there. I’ll save up my “subs” and give them that. I like to support local libraries. Xxxxxxx.
The Library hosted a number of activities through the week including toddler reading groups, craft sessions and events of various kinds and the village is going to miss a valuable asset.
Unfortunately, a number of the volunteers who staff the Library are in the ‘at-risk’ category or for other reasons are ‘self-isolating’.
Hopefully when the current crisis passes the Community Library will be one of the first local facilities to resume ‘normal service’.
Other County libraries are open at Coalville, Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, but check before attending as the situation is very fluid.
