6.30pm on Monday 8th July saw a number of club officials, training staff and 26 junior members gather on one of the courts to welcome 10yr old Ethan Hill from Whetstone as the club’s one hundredth junior member.
To mark the occasion, Ethan was presented with a free one year membership by the Club Secretary, Ted Ardley.
Introducing Ethan to the assembled members and guests, organiser of the juniors, Alan Woods, said that youth membership of the club had recently risen by about 25%. The same period last year had seen the youth membership peak at around 75.
Was this year’s increase down to the ‘Andy Murray’ effect or the general interest around the Wimbledon fortnight …Alan thought not. He said:
“This has all gone on before Andy Murray won Wimbledon and so we might have even more children coming along.”
Mr Woods went on to briefly introduce some of the coaching staff present, including Tommy Lane, Daniel Carnegie-Wilson, Rusell Taylor, Charlie Coor and Head Coach Tom Mattinson – all of whom were on hand to help the members become good tennis players.
It then fell to Club Secretary Ted Ardley to make the presentation, following which, the junior members present lined up for a photo.
The Club has a thriving Junior Section with a popular programme on Monday evenings throughout the year.
The Club provides excellent competitive opportunities throughout the year for all ages and abilities with both Adult and Junior teams competing in the Leicestershire Leagues. They also have their own yearly Club Championships for both our Adult and Junior members.
