Major travel disruption is expected over the next three days due to the demolition of a railway bridge.

The bridge in Saffron Road, Wigston, will be closed to road traffic from midnight tonight through to 6am on Monday.

Contractors for Network Rail are demolishing the bridge and building a new one in its place which will allow larger freight trains to use the line.

Diversions will be in place and motorists are warned to expect delays.

Arriva bus routes, 47 and 48, will be affected, with no through service from Wigston Magna via South Wigston in either direction.

The road closure will exacerbate traffic congestion already being experienced around Whetstone due to the closure of the B582 Enderby Road while work is carried out on a bridge further down the line.
