Don’t lose your right to vote!

Posted on June 14, 2012 by staff

People are being asked to confirm or update the details of all members of their household to make sure that everyone who is eligible to vote is included on the electoral register.

Blaby District Council will be sending electoral registration forms to all homes in the district from 20th June 2012 as part of its annual canvass.

The canvass is usually carried out between August and October but is being brought forward this year to make sure all eligible voters are registered so they can take part in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections on 15th November 2012.

Anyone who does not appear on the electoral register will also be unable to vote at parliamentary, European parliamentary and local government elections.

Residents are required by law to complete and return the form for all eligible persons who will be living at the property on 15 October 2012. Failure to do so could result in prosecution and also may affect a person’s ability to access credit facilities.

The form will show the names of those who already appear on the electoral register at that address. If no changes are needed residents can confirm the details by freephone, text or internet using the security code provided.

Anyone confirming their details by freephone and internet will be given the option to be included or excluded from the Edited Register (See notes below).

People using the automated system do not need to post the form back to the Council.

If there are new names to be added or other alterations to make then the form must be completed and returned to the council offices in the envelope provided.

For more information contact electoral services on 0116 272 7560.

Notes:

The Full Register lists the name and address of everyone who is registered to vote. The Council holds a copy. Anyone can look at it, but it is a criminal offence to supply or use copies for purposes other than those set down in law.

The Edited Register is available for general sale and can be used for any purpose. It can be bought by any person, company or commercial organisation for commercial activities such as marketing.

If a person previously chose not to appear on the Edited Register this is not shown on the form. If they wish to be left off the Edited Register again they will need to put a cross in Box 8 on the registration form.
