Council responds to fire at former GEC site in Whetstone

Following a fire at the former GEC site on Cambridge Road, Whetstone, on Wednesday June 15 the District Council say they would like to reassure residents they are working with police and local partners to resolve issues at the site.

Several enforcement notices have been issued to the owners asking them to secure the property.

The Council say they have also carried out works to secure the perimeter fence surrounding the site on a number of occasions, only for it to be vandalised again.

Along with residents, the Council is concerned about the negative visual impact this site is having on the area and say they have been trying to work with the owners to find a solution to this.

In December 2010 the Council began exploring the possibility of applying for funding to help bring economic growth and activity to the site; however the owners did not wish to pursue this option further.

The Council are now working to resolve the long term future of the site and have stated they will take the necessary action to make sure the site is secure.
